According to the National Center for Health Statistics (a division of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM,) 38% of American adults use a form of complementary or alternative medicine.

Do you or someone you know use complementary or alternative medicine?

If you do engage in complementary or alternative medicine, you undoubtedly have a doctor you turn to for his or her trusted advice. A doctor whose advice, whether in person or virtually, has seen you through a health crisis or just helped you to improve your overall well being. Who is that trusted doctor?

These doctors leading the way in non-traditional medical treatments are pioneers in their respective fields. Many of them dare to challenge the traditional medicine models which leaves them open to the scrutiny and criticism of their peers while simultaneously opening the doors of true healing to the public.

I’d like to acknowledge a few of these doctors for their abilities and willingness to go the extra mile. They dare to speak the truth and lead the way in what’s become a national health movement now recognizing the advantages of complementary and alternative medicine.

The top five doctors are as follows in no particular order:

Top 5 All Natural Healers

1. Dr. Ben Lerner
Dr. Ben Lerner is considered to be America’s Maximized Living’s leader. With two of Lerner’s books finding top rated spots on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Christian Bookseller’s Association, and USA Today bestseller’s list, Lerner’s name is commonly associated with all natural health and optimal living.

As a result of watching his father die at the early age of fifty-two and his mother suffer a stroke just a few years later, Lerner became motivated to discover ways to live healthy and happy lives. He understood, innately, that the key to ultimate health was diet, exercise, and keeping stress levels sane.

Today, Lerner continues to spread the message of attaining maximized living through his center in Florida, Celebration Family Chiropractic. (Click here to find a Maximized Living Chiropractor near you)

2. Jordan Rubin
Jordan Rubin’s journey into the world of all natural health and healing started as a quest to improve his own health at a very young age, nineteen. During this year when Rubin was supposed to be in his prime he sadly lived in a wheelchair, weighed a mere 104 pounds, and saw no signs of hope for life of vitality. As a result of what doctors described as the most serious case of Crohn’s disease they’ve ever seen, Rubin’s body was battered and sickly.
After visiting with a California nutritionist who told Rubin he was sick because he was not following God’s plan, Rubin became inspired. He delved into the Bible and recorded every bit of advice he found about eating, living, and optimal health. Upon beginning to follow this plan which was based upon eating raw, organically grown whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and fermented dairy, grass fed beef and poultry his fearsome state of health began to turn around. He knew he was on the right track. Rubin’s health improved and he dedicated his life to sharing his newly found vision of health with as many people as possible.
In accordance with his new life plan, Rubin wrote the book, The Maker’s Diet, which rested on the New York Times bestseller’s list for a full forty-seven weeks.  Rubin is also the founder of the international supplement company, The Garden of Life, one of the most reputable supplement companies in the world.

3. Dr. Mercola

Dr. Mercola started his website in 1997. His site offers information to visitors on ways to achieve optimal health and well being from non-traditional medical approaches. His list of awards, degrees, and accomplishments is long. One of his most prestigious recognitions was in 2009 by the Huffington Post. He was named the Top Ultimate Wellness Game Changer.

This honor recognizes “100 innovators, visionaries, and leaders in ten categories who are harnessing the power of new media to reshape their fields and change the world.”

He defines his motivation and dedication to make you as health as possible in two ways;

  • Providing the most up to date natural health information and resources that will most benefit you and,
  • Exposing corporate, government and mass media hype that diverts you away from what is truly best for your health and often to a path that leads straight into an early grave.

Hats off to you Dr. Mercola for leading the way in providing America with the facts and tools to heal!

4. Jillian Michaels
Most of you have probably heard of Jillian Michaels who is one of the most recognized faces from the hit show, The Biggest Loser and Losing It with Jillian. But Michael’s career in health and nutrition started long before the first showing of these hit television series.

Michaels, a personal trainer from Los Angeles, began her own personal weight loss pursuit as an overweight teen at the age of just thirteen when her mother enrolled her in a martial arts class. At that time Michaels says she was five feet tall and weighed 175 lbs. After battling through this extreme weight loss and (obviously) coming out on the other, healthier side, Michaels dedicated her life to helping overweight people lose the unwanted, unhealthy pounds.
Her programs involve kickboxing, yoga, plyometrics, Pilates, and weight training. She encourages people to enjoy life and exercising too. Her most popular program, aside from her hit television shows, is the “30 Day Shred.”
5. Sally Fallon
And last but not least is groundbreaking health advocate, Sally Fallon. This mother of four spent her time researching and then serving her children what she learned in nutrition. After reader Weston A. Price’s book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, Fallon decided to put his theories of animal fats from old fashioned sources such as cod liver oil, eggs, and liver to the test in her own home. Her discoveries? A diet rich in these healthy, high quality fats makes for happy, healthy, and well balanced children.

Fallon went on to co-author with Mary Enig, PhD., her own groundbreaking, now classic cookbook, Nourishing Traditions:  The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats.
But Fallon’s drive to help society live longer, feel better, and thrive hasn’t stopped there. She is the founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation, editor of the Foundation’s quarterly newsletter, contributor to numerous holistic healing publications, and founder of the Campaign for Real Milk. In addition, she is the president and owner of NewTrends Publishing who has published such works as The Cholesterol Myths by Uffe Ravnskov, MD, PhD; The Untold Story of Milk by Ron Schmid, ND; The Yoga of Eating by Charles Eisenstein; The Fourfold Path to Healing by Thomas Cowan, MD; and The Whole Soy Story (February 2005) by Kaayla T. Daniel, PhD.

Fallon, like the other listed health guru’s, has an extreme dedication to this field and serving the good of the public through honest, unbiased education on nutirition, lifestyle, and how these both impact health and well being.
Now this list is by no means inclusive, and in fact, I have in mind a few other very noteworthy doctors and health guru’s to add to this impressive list. But we’ll save that for the next article on the nation’s top health guru’s and their mission to instill health and wellness in all the world’s peoples.
